IPL 2026 Purple Cap race — top bowling performers, most wickets, economy rates and who leads the IPL 2026 bowling title race.
The Purple Cap is awarded to the IPL's leading wicket-taker. Like the Orange Cap, it is held in real time by whoever has taken the most wickets and is officially awarded at the end of the tournament. Leg-spinners and death bowlers tend to dominate this award due to their wicket-taking ability.
Jasprit Bumrah is the favourite for the Purple Cap whenever he plays a full IPL season. His wicket-taking ability, particularly at the death, makes him consistently among the leading wicket-takers. Yuzvendra Chahal — the all-time IPL leading wicket-taker — is always a contender for this award regardless of which franchise he represents.
Pat Cummins, Mohammed Shami, and Rashid Khan all represent serious threats from the pace and spin departments respectively. Rashid Khan's leg-spin is particularly effective on flat Indian pitches where his googly is devastating.
Beyond total wickets, economy rate (runs conceded per over) and average (runs per wicket) determine a bowler's true impact. A bowler with 15 wickets at economy 7.5 provides more value than one with 20 wickets at economy 10.5 — the latter is allowing too many runs despite the wickets.
